What This Means If You’re Buying a Car Now
COE is one of the largest single components of a car’s on-the-road (OTR) price in Singapore, so movements in the premium feed directly into what you pay and how much you finance.
- When COE rises: OTR prices on new cars typically follow, and monthly instalments climb with them. Buyers waiting on the sidelines often see the gap they were hoping for shrink. In this kind of market, locking in a quote earlier — with a fixed COE bid — can protect you from the next round’s increase.
- When COE falls: The savings flow through to OTR, but timing matters. Dealers usually price based on the COE they secured, so a drop may take a round or two to fully reflect in showroom prices.
- When COE is flat: Stability is good for planning. It’s a useful window to compare models and finalise financing without the pressure of a moving target.
If you’re working out a realistic monthly budget, our team can break down a transparent OTR + COE + loan structure on any model in our showroom, including 0% downpayment schemes and tenures of up to 10 years.
Which Cars Are Best Value at This COE Level
The right car often depends on which COE category it falls under. Here’s how some of the models at Royal Motor Grandeur typically map across categories — exact category depends on the specific variant, so always confirm with us before committing.
Category A — everyday family and commuter cars
Cat A covers cars up to 1,600cc and up to 97kW. This is the segment for compact sedans, small SUVs and entry-level family cars built for daily commuting, school runs and reasonable running costs. From our line-up, models that commonly sit in this category include the Honda WR-V, Honda Freed, Honda Vezel, Toyota Sienta and Mazda3 (variant-dependent).
Category B — larger MPVs, SUVs and most EVs
Cat B covers cars above 1,600cc or above 97kW — which is where most full-size MPVs, larger SUVs and electric vehicles sit, since EV power outputs typically exceed the 97kW threshold. From our line-up, this includes the Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire, Honda Odyssey, Honda Stepwagon, Nissan Serena, MG4 Urban EV, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV and MG M9 EV.
Looking at pre-owned?
A pre-owned car can side-step part of the COE volatility, since the existing COE is already baked into the price. Our pre-owned stock covers both Cat A and Cat B equivalents across multiple brands.
Next COE Bidding Dates
The next COE bidding exercise is scheduled for [4 Jun 2026]. COE bidding typically takes place twice a month, with results released on the same day the exercise closes. Stay tuned to this page — we update the numbers as soon as the results are out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is COE?
COE stands for Certificate of Entitlement. It’s a permit granted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) that gives the holder the right to register and use a vehicle in Singapore for 10 years. To get a COE, dealers and individuals bid in a twice-monthly open auction, and the lowest successful bid sets the Quota Premium that everyone in that round pays.
What’s the difference between Cat A and Cat B?
Cat A covers cars up to 1,600cc and up to 97kW (130hp) of power. Cat B covers cars above 1,600cc or above 97kW — so most full-size MPVs, larger SUVs and electric cars fall here, since most EVs exceed the 97kW threshold. The same dual cc/kW rule means a fuel-efficient small EV can still end up in Cat B if its motor is powerful enough.
When is the next COE bidding exercise?
COE bidding takes place twice a month, typically on the first and third Wednesdays. The next round is scheduled for [next bidding date]. Results are released on the same day the exercise closes.
Why does the COE price change every round?
The COE price is set by supply and demand. The LTA releases a fixed quota of certificates each round based on the de-registration of older vehicles and overall vehicle growth. If more buyers bid than there are certificates, the premium goes up. If demand softens, it falls. Major factors include the timing of past COE expiries (a “supply cycle”), interest rate movements, new model launches and broader economic sentiment.
How long is a COE valid?
A COE is valid for 10 years from the date of registration. At the end of the 10 years, you can either deregister and scrap the vehicle (with potential PARF rebate if eligible) or renew the COE for another 5 or 10 years by paying the Prevailing Quota Premium.
What is Category E and how is it different?
Cat E is the Open category. It can be used to register any type of vehicle except motorcycles — so a Cat E COE can go to a Cat A or Cat B car. Cat E tends to track Cat B closely because that’s where the demand for higher-power and larger cars sits.
Does the OTR price drop immediately when COE falls?
Not always immediately. Dealers price new cars based on the COE they have already secured, so a sudden drop in the latest round usually takes a round or two to flow through to showroom prices. Conversely, when COE rises sharply, prices tend to adjust faster. Speaking to a dealer directly is the best way to know the exact OTR you’d pay today.

COE is only one part of the picture — the other half is finding a car and financing structure that genuinely fits your budget. At Royal Motor Grandeur in Ubi/AMK, we specialise in helping buyers cut through COE noise with a clean, transparent OTR breakdown, bank loan packages, 0% downpayment options and loan tenures of up to 10 years.
